The Man Box

Understanding the Man Box — a set of rigid expectations that define what it means to 'be a man' in many cultures.

Originally developed by A Call to Men, The Man Box is a concept that describes a restrictive set of beliefs, behaviors, and expectations that societies place on men. These rigid norms include ideas like men should be tough, stoic, dominant, and self-reliant — and that showing vulnerability, emotions, or asking for help is a sign of weakness.

The Man Box is a concept developed by researchers to describe a restrictive set of beliefs, behaviors, and expectations that societies place on men. These rigid norms include ideas like men should be tough, stoic, dominant, and self-reliant — and that showing vulnerability, emotions, or asking for help is a sign of weakness.

Research from Equimundo and others has shown that men who conform most strongly to Man Box norms report poorer mental health outcomes, are more likely to engage in risky behaviors, and have more difficulty forming meaningful relationships.

Understanding the Man Box is the first step toward breaking free from its constraints and embracing a more relational, authentic form of masculinity.
