Edward Kenway begins the game as a self-interested pirate seeking wealth, status, and freedom. His pursuit of infamy leads to repeated personal losses and damaged relationships. Throughout the story he gradually recognizes the emptiness of a life driven solely by ambition and dominance. Male friendships play an important role, particularly as Edward witnesses the downfall of fellow pirates trapped by pride and violence. By the conclusion, he embraces responsibility, family, and meaningful connection with male and female supporting characters. The narrative functions as a critique of reckless masculine individualism while depicting personal growth through self-reflection and relational commitments.
