‘Vault Hunters’ travel across multiple planets to stop the Calypso Twins, charismatic cult leaders who seek godlike power from the Vaults. Along the way, they join a diverse resistance made up of returning heroes and new allies. The story explores loyalty, legacy, and the burden of leadership, particularly through characters such as Lilith and Vaughn. Male characters frequently display bravado, aggression, and competitive masculinity, often played for humor. However, the narrative also highlights teamwork, and the emotional costs of heroism. While vulnerability exists, it is usually secondary to the action and comedy. The game’s representation of masculinity leans toward exaggerated dominance-based archetypes, though several characters gradually learn to place trust in others and act for collective rather than personal goals. The game also features positive representations of same-sex relationships in the form of the supporting characters Hammerlock and Wainwright.
