You play as ‘V’, a mercenary in Night City, who becomes linked to the digital consciousness of late rocker-revolutionary Johnny Silverhand. Their shared struggle explores identity, mortality, and the pressure to live up to cultural myths of power and success. Male characters (including if the player chooses a male presenting V) frequently confront expectations around violence, status, and emotional suppression. Played by digital incarnation of Keanu Reeves, Johnny represents a classic counter cultural form of dominant masculinity but is repeatedly challenged by the consequences of the choices that have ensued from this identity. The narrative encourages reflection on whether power, reputation, and control actually provide fulfillment. Friendships, romance, and vulnerability are central to many character arcs across genders. Through its focus on emotional conflict, self-examination, and human connection amid a dystopian setting, the game regularly questions masculine dominance while also offering meaningful examples of relational manhood. However, there is some variability in the extent to which these themes play out based on player choices in this branching narrative.
