Gregory, Jacob, and Mr. Johnson are — from the beginning — men defined by care, collaboration, and emotional presence. The show’s comedy never depends on their failure to be these things. Abbott Elementary avoids turning Jacob into a “token gay” — his romance with Zach unfolds with care and authenticity. All three main male characters express a wide emotional range, with Gregory being the show’s most emotionally complex male character — his confessional asides are a sustained practice of naming his feelings.
