DTF St. Louis is a portrait of masculine midlife desperation that treats its male characters with extraordinary compassion even as it holds them fully accountable for the harm they cause. Floyd is a man measuring himself against a masculine provider ideal he cannot meet, causing harm in his flailing attempts to do so. His angst manifests as inadequacy-driven passive aggression, while Clark’s care for Floyd (financial, emotional, and practical) is behavioural relational masculinity in action. Clark reframes the meaning of manhood around friendship and mutual support rather than individual heroic competence, though his terrible betrayal makes his portrayal dark and complex.
