Schitt$ Creek was written with the premise of creating a world without homophobia - in doing so, it’s also a show where Dominance Manhood is simply and quietly absent. All of its male characters — gay and straight, young and old, ridiculous and sincere — are defined by care, friendship, and the quiet daily work of loving the people in their lives. Johnny consistently offers quiet, warm support for his son David’s relationship anxieties, insecurities, and fears. David receives it with gratitude and increasing emotional openness and trust across the seasons. Johnny grapples with the realization that his identity is not defined by performing masculine corporate success, while Patrick and David’s business venture exemplifies male collaboration.
