Relational Manhood

Traits of relational, connected masculinity.

Ted Lasso passes the Caring Men in Media Test a dozen times over: The show’s entire philosophy is that emotional expression is strength. Key examples:

  • Roy’s gruff receipt of other men’s feelings, and also his own, is consistently framed as something he must learn to expand.
  • The Diamond Dogs explicitly create a space where men can name their feelings to each other without shame.
  • Multiple character arcs explore the costs of a masculine-egotist performance and physical identity.
  • Whenever male characters inflict harm, the show consistently depicts it as failure, not as admirable or acceptable.
  • Ted’s panic attacks in S1-S2 are depicted as the cost of never letting anyone see he’s struggling, but not as weakness.

Overall, the show never questions whether men can be emotionally present, collaborative, and caring; it spotlights a suite of male characters who show up as just that, each in their own unique way. Ted Lasso is one of the strongest expressions of Relational Manhood in mainstream American television.
